Curry School Faculty-Student Mentor Relationship is Ideal

Many former students can vividly recall the advice and the professors that shaped their college experience. For fourth-year Curry School student Aubree Surrency, that professor is LaVae Hoffman, an associate professor of speech language pathology. Hoffman became Aubree’s mentor at a particularly vulnerable time. It was during Aubree's second year, when she was deciding to switch from a pre-med track to the speech pathology program.

Improving Special Ed Instructional Tools

Across the nation, 6.5 million, or 13 percent, of public school students between the ages of 3 and 21 receive special education services. Yet 49 states report a shortage of special education teachers and qualified personnel. These significant numbers illustrate the nation’s demand for highly qualified teachers who are equipped to educate these students.

Champions of the Rising Stars

Innovative education research by Curry School early career professors is getting a boost, thanks to two astute donors brought together by the Curry Foundation.

Richard R. “Dick” Abidin is a well-known professor emeritusof the Curry School, who founded our Clinical Psychology program in the 1960s and achieved prominence as a scholar and leader in his field. Peter K. Scaturro, a father of a second year student at U.Va., is a retired financial executive—a former bank CEO and partner at Goldman Sachs.
